Mindfulness for Stress
The Breathworks Foundation 8 week programme
Stressful things happen to us all the time both in our personal and working lives and there is little we can do about that, however what we can do something about is the all the unnecessary stress we bring upon ourselves by our reaction to these stressful events.
Mindfulness helps us deal with these situations by teaching us to become more aware of what we are doing when we react in this way and directing us back to the cause of the stress and not getting ‘tied up’ in all the unnecessary thoughts, feelings and judgements that so add to our difficulties.
Through practicing Mindfulness meditation we learn to tap into our own inner resources and we can develop skills to help us achieve a sense of calmness from where our problems are much easier to deal with, in this way it changes our relationship to our difficulties.

Mindfulness Based Cognitive Therapy (MBCT)
Details from the Oxford Mindfulness website http://oxfordmindfulness.org/ states that Mindfulness-based Cognitive Therapy (MBCT) was developed by Zindel Segal, Mark Williams and John Teasdale, based on Jon Kabat-Zinn’s Mindfulness-based Stress Reduction programme. The MBCT programme was designed specifically to help people who suffer repeated bouts of depression.
It combines the ideas of cognitive therapy with meditative practices and attitudes based on the cultivation of mindfulness.
Participants are taught skills to help them recognise ‘automatic’ unhelpful ways of thinking. One of the core skills that MBCT is teaching is to intentionally become more aware of these thoughts, see them for what they are and not get caught up in them.
Each participant will receive CDs and handouts and there is an expected committment to doing home practice, consisting of meditation practice for 45 mins a day.
Each session will comprise of some guided experiential practice and some theory. There will also be an opportunity to talk about experience of home practice and any difficulties or obstacles experienced with it and how to deal with those.
How long is the course?
The course is an 8 week programme and each session lasts 2 hours.
Who is the course for?
The MBCT programme was originally designed to help people who suffer repeated bouts of depression, but is increasingly recognised as a way that anyone can use to deal more skilfully with the stresses and strains of daily living.
